Through Rain and Snow and Dark of Night, Depend on Weatherall Company
With increased consumer interest, beginning in the early 1980's, in returning to a more "natural" style versus "city" life and forsaking the big city for a more relaxed atmosphere, the log home industry began a rapid expansion that is still being enjoyed today. The need for a superior home sealant system became apparent. The requirements for this new sealant were elasticity, adhesion, flexibility and weathering characteristics.
At the same time, the desire was to provide the appearance of the old mortar texture.
With exceptional technical capabilities, in 1982 the Weatherall Company became the first company to develop an all-acrylic, elastomeric chinking for log homes. This revolutionary new product was known as Weatherall 1010 Chinking®. Shortly thereafter Weatherall Company developed a new log finish that was compatible with the chinking. Next a unique backer-rod was engineered to complete the first true Log Home Sealant System-a total system that would provide the ultimate protection against the harsh elements of weather: sunlight, moisture and wind. The entire Log Home Sealant System now consists of:
- Weatherall 1010 Chinking®
- Triple Stretch® Chinking
- Log Guard® Interior Wood Finish
- Tri-Rod® Backer-Rod
- UV Guard® Exterior Wood Finish
- UV Guard® Premium Caulk
- UV Guard® Textured Caulk
- UV Guard® Deck & Fence Coating
This system not only enhances the beauty of the log home, but also assures unsurpassed protection and longevity.
With the advent of this new Log Home Sealant System came the need to develop a strict set of standards and appropriate application methods. The Weatherall Company Chinking Application Guide evolved and is currently available to all homeowners, applicators and builders.
Weatherall Company continually updates and improves product quality to provide enhanced performance. We take pride in choosing only premium raw materials to produce the highest quality products. Weatherall Company is proud to be among the leaders in the industry and the choice of log home builders, architects and applicators.

Components of the Sealant System
Weatherall 1010 Chinking
A flexible, mortar-textured blend of latex acrylics that dries to form elastic, weather-tight surface that requires virtually no maintenance. The industry standard for appearance, workability, and lasting performance, Weatherall 1010 Chinking replaces mortar-based chinks, mastics and glossy caulks in applications where a beautiful and traditional textured chinked look is desired. This product must be applied over a backer rod or bond breaker (see section on backings).
Weatherall 1010 Lite Chinking
A flexible, lightly textured blend of latex acrylics ideal for pump or grout bag application that dries to form an elastic, weather-tight surface that requires virtually no maintenance. Light textured in appearance, with superior workability and lasting performance, Weatherall 1010 Lite Chinking replaces mortar-based chinks, mastics and glossy caulks in applications where a smooth light textured chink look is desired. This product must be applied over a backer-rod or bond breaker (see section on backings).
Triple Stretch Textured Log Home Sealant
A uniquely formulated chinking manufactured specifically for use where exceptional elasticity is required, such as green logs with greater moisture content, new log construction or, log or slab siding, This product must be applied over a backer rod or bond breaker (see section on backings).
Tri-Rod Backer-Rod
A closed-cell polyethylene foam backer-rod designed for use in chink-style round log homes. The triangular shape fits snugly in the joint between the logs and provides the optimum backing shape for chink-style joints. Tri-Rod is non-absorptive and highly insulating. Tri-Rod is available in 5 sizes: ¾”, 1”, 1 ¼”, 1 ½” and 2”.
UV Guard Premium Caulking
A smooth latex caulk with excellent UV resistance and weathering characteristics. Elastic to 200% total joint movement, and the only caulk to use when appearance, weather resistance and long-term flexibility are critical. This is a professional grade sealant/caulk, exhibiting excellent adhesion and high recovery in dynamically moving joints.
UV Guard Textured Caulk
A highly elastic textured caulk specifically developed for use on log homes and many other construction-related areas where maximum elasticity is required, such as non-backer-rod joints and where a textured appearance is desired for aesthetics. Ideally used on full scribe or Swedish cope or joints with minimal area for a bond breaker system.
Redi-Set between Log Sealant
Redi-Set between log sealant is specifically designed for use between log courses during stacking. Formulated from the highest quality, pure acrylic latex, Redi-Set forms a permanent bond that remains flexible, water-resistant and weather-tight. Redi-Set is for use on Swedish cope, single and double tongue and groove and flat on flat log applications.
UV Guard Exterior Wood Finish
A highly effective exterior acrylic wood finish that contains UV blockers and absorbers to screen the harmful and destructive effects of the sun’s rays. With the recommended 3 coat application, UV Guard provides long-term protection against fading and weathering, repelling moisture while allowing the wood to breathe naturally. As a water-based, non-toxic, non-flammable finish it is very environmentally friendly.
UV Guard II Exterior Wood Finish – 2 Coat System
With the addition of ultra-fine reflective particles, UV Guard® II offers the ultimate protection and longevity to surfaces that are continuously exposed to the harmful and destructive ultraviolet rays of the sun. It is non-toxic, non-flammable and unsurpassed in performance with the added advantage of needing only 2 coats, either two coats of color or one coat of color and one coat of clear. (Two coats of clear only are NOT recommended.)
Log Guard Interior Top Coat
Log Guard Interior Top Coat is a non-yellowing water-based formulation of highest quality latex acrylics that provides a safe, lasting, natural finish on interior wood walls and woodwork.
